UConn makes it Conference Weak ... Plus, a poetry contest
So honestly: Does Jim Calhoun even pack for a second day when he comes to the Big East Tournament any more? Now I know he's had his share of success over the years, and his teams haven't been at the championship level recently. But today was his fourth straight loss in this event, and it has to be the worst.
Especially the way it ended. UConn clawed within striking distance in the final seconds, but opted not to foul on three different possessions. I thought Jay Bilas was going to have an anuerisym. I'm dying to hear how Calhoun explains this -- and whether or not he has some choice words for the officiating, which was, in a word, brutal.
Both games in the afternoon session at the Garden were duds. Best game of the day: Illinois beating Penn State in the Big Ten Tournament on a layup with four seconds left. Biggest upset of the day: How did Colorado beat Baylor in the first round of the Big 12? Baylor was a great story early in the season, but now you wonder if they're worth an at-large bid.
Alright. Lots of games tonight, so I'm going to take a break -- yeah, Northwestern will have to continue its upset bid without me -- to bounce around outside for a while. But I will leave you with this odd thought of the day. The Big Ten is holding a poetry contest during the tournament. Which got me thinking ... if anybody comes up with a REALLY GOOD tournament haiku and posts it here, you'll get a bobblehead. I'll get you started.

9 months, 3 weeks agoYou could be right, Dave. Certainly, there's no doubt it's the conference with the most quality team, although I'd vote for the Pac-10 as the BEST conference this year.
I'll judge the poetry contest later today. Some excellent haikus!

9 months, 4 weeks agoBig East deff the most competitive conference from top to bottom.
Rutgers who is sitting dead last was able to upset Pitt and Villanova (i believe) while scaring Notre Dame, plue their recruiting class is looking pretty good.
Mark it now, 1 Big East team will make the final four, as normalicy

According to wikipedia, a good haiku has the following properties (which hopefully get formatted right, if the markdown works):
Note my reference to spring, and one could argue that I'm contrasting picks and brogs, since brogs are sharp pointy objects.

9 months, 4 weeks agoBB, remember how good Pitt was before they lost Fields? I know they have a phenominal history @ The Worlds Most Famous Arena but I can remember how good they were when Levance Fields was healthy earlier this year. It'll depend on the draw they receive but I'm keeping an eye on Pitt

9 months, 4 weeks agoLove the poems -- keep 'em coming. I'll pick a winner tomorrow. And yes, Pitt looks impressive. But they usually do at MSG. Not so much in the tourney.
